One of my college projects I worked on was redesigning an already existing magazine cover/article. I chose the magazine Sojourners, which focuses on social justice issues within the Christian church. Being very passionate about bringing issues of racism in the United States to light, I chose to redesign the article "How Evangelicals Became White" by Kelly Brown Douglas. The article details the history of racism and radical white supremacy that has continued to thrive within the American Christian ideology.

Cover featuring the article "How Evangelicals Became White" for Sojourners magazine.

The idea behind the illustrations was to mix traditional Fresco-style images of Christ and the Virgin Mary with alt-right accessories/ideals. For example Jesus holding the American flag triumphantly and the Virgin Mary depicted as a very glamorized Aryan-featured woman.

My goal was to make people uncomfortable with these illustrations to really drive home the point that racism is alive and well within the community. In order to make changes, people need to confront these issues head on and actually make changes instead of just pretending they aren't there.
